Eight Espanyol players have been stuck down by gastroenteritis, only a matter of days before playing Real Betis.
Catalan publication Sport reports Victor Alvarez as the first player to be hit with the illness, noting symptoms on Monday, and on Tuesday seven more of Constantin Galca’s squad were afflicted and unable to train.
Victor Sanchez, Burgui, Marco Asensio, Hernan Perez, Gerard Moreno and Abraham joined Alvarez in the sick bay and the last time the squad ate together was Saturday evening, after winning 4-2 at Sporting Gijon.
Alvaro Gonzalez was added to the casualties after he was unable to complete training on Tuesday.
Espanyol’s medical department is monitoring the situation to watch for further cases, while it’s not known how many if any of the group will be ready for Thursday’s visit of Betis.
