Asier Illarramendi has asked Real Sociedad fans for “forgiveness” after Friday’s 5-1 defeat to Sporting Gijon in La Liga.
Antonio Sanabria’s hat-trick was the highlight as the relegation-threatened Asturians moved to within three points of La Real, and the midfielder urged supporters not to lose the faith as he reflected on an evening “to forget”.
“I ask the fans for forgiveness,” he said after the game.
“It was a match, in which everything was negative, but I’m confident it won’t happen again.
“It was a game to forget and no-one played near to their best at any moment.
“The game was just an accident as we’d been playing well recently.
“We said things couldn’t get any worse at half-time and tried to come out fighting, but Sporting scored the fourth goal and it wasn’t to be.”
