Raul stressed support for all La Liga teams when in action in the Champions League. “If Real Madrid are out, I’m glad if Barcelona or Atletico Madrid win it.”
The iconic former Madrid forward was on Monday quoted as saying he was pleased to see La Blaugrana win the competition last season and expanded on that opinion in an interview with Cadena Ser.
“If Real Madrid are eliminated, as a Spaniard I’m glad if Barcelona or Atletico win the Champions League,” Marca quotes Raul as saying.
“I’ve never been anti anything, not as a player or now. I’m a football man and a Madridista.
“Being a footballer is the best profession and I would have continued playing for the rest of my life. The values of the locker room are incredible.
“At Madrid we always tried to convey to the newcomers what it meant to be at Real Madrid.”
Raul was also asked about the Spain national team, having represented La Roja for a significant length of time without a trophy, only to see the squad lift silverware after he was dropped.
“I had 10 wonderful years but couldn’t get a trophy, then enjoyed from outside the success,” he recalled.
“I thought I could be in the team of Luis Aragones, but I respected the decision. The first few months I was out I struggled, I felt a little bit on my own.”
