Villarreal President Fernando Roig has challenged his side to see out their bid for Champions League qualification.
Cedric Bakambu’s brace earned the Yellow Submarine a 2-0 victory over Sporting Gijon on Sunday and the feat of matching their best-ever start to a La Liga season, with the team only a point behind third-placed Real Madrid and eight ahead of nearest challengers Celta Vigo.
“I’m very satisfied with the work done by the team in the first round of the season,” the patron said after the game.
“Thirty-nine points offers us tranquillity and allows us see things with optimism.
“[Survival] is our first objective of every season and we always try to achieve it as soon as possible.
“Now it’s time to find our best position and, in principle, achieve European qualification, possibly the Champions League.
“We are a point behind Real Madrid and have a good advantage over the teams below us, so hopefully we’ll make [the CL].”
