Jose Luis Mendilibar has heaped praise on his “amazing” Eibar players after they ended the first half of the season with 30 points in La Liga
Goals from Takashi Inui and Borja Baston in Sunday’s 2-1 win against Espanyol fired the Basques to sixth in the table, some 15 points clear of the relegation zone, and the Coach admits he thought such a feat to be “impossible” given their rushed start to the campaign.
“For us, the most important thing is how many points we’ve picked up and that we’re ahead of our rivals,” he said after the game.
“We’ve had a good first half to the season. I told the players to look at the distance between ourselves and the teams below us until 40 points were achieved and value the points they pick up.
“But apart from the points, we’ve felt good and [our overall progress this season] has been amazing.
“We thought finishing the first half of the season with 30 points was impossible, but we have achieved it and now need less [points] to stay up.
“Still, the only thing in our heads is achieving survival.
“We’ve haven’t had any bad games, although we faltered in our second halves against Real Sociedad and Deportivo La Coruna.
“Thirty points are our award for how hard we’ve worked.”
