Sabin Merino insisted no one at Athletic Bilbao blames Mikel San Jose for his error against Real Madrid. ‘Things like that are part of football.’
San Jose’s errant back-pass allowed Karim Benzema an easy finish to open the scoring at San Mames and Benzema later added a second shortly after Merino had equalised.
“Mistakes are part of football. I’m sure he’ll be recovered in the next game,” Merino said, AS reports.
“Madrid have a lot of quality and the minimum is they’ll score. We put in a lot of work to draw level but they scored again too soon.
“They’re a very strong team, we have to be great to overcome them with intensity. Their quality defines the game, they’re players of great quality and that means a lot.
“We’ve played a lot of games and it’s difficult to be at full intensity in all of them. We have to find a solution.
“I feel like I’m gaining confidence and I’m trying to settle into the team. Goals are always good for confidence.”
