Ernesto Valverde said he was “delighted” with Athletic Bilbao’s attitude during their 3-1 victory over Augsburg in the Europa League on Thursday.
Halil Altintop gave the competition debutants an early lead at San Mames, but the hosts staged a successful comeback in the second half thanks to a brace from top goalscorer Aritz Aduriz and Markel Susaeta’s clincher at the death to ensure their group campaign began on the right foot.
“I’m delighted with the reaction of the team. We’ve earned 3 points and beaten a great team,” the Coach said after the game.
“Aritz was very good, especially in the second half. He wasn’t very successful in the first half but was nonetheless instrumental.
“Markel gets better each day. He’s a great player and I’m happy with him.
“We faced some very quick and strong players. [Inigo] Lekue had some issues but he’s strong and quick too.
“We don’t have much time to prepare for Sunday’s game [against Villarreal], but neither do they. They’re a tough team to play.”
