Santiago Canizares believes David De Gea is the ideal goalkeeper for Real Madrid as he’s a step above new signing Kiko Casilla.
Canizares has been speaking to the International Business Times, with his comments picked up by AS, and the former international custodian argues Los Blancos won’t find a better solution than the Manchester United man.
“De Gea is perfect for Madrid. [Manchester United] want to renew his contract but haven’t, and next year he’s free. He’s a goalkeeper of international standard, one of the best in the world,” Canizares said.
“The goal at Santiago Bernabeu is the same size as other places but many people find it too big. That’s why you have to appreciate Iker Casillas’ career. De Gea has the personality for Madrid.
“Casilla is a good goalkeeper in certain conditions, but obviously he’s not at De Gea’s level. De Gea is who Madrid need to win titles and games.”
Canizares also offered his thoughts on the departure of Casillas to Porto, revealing his belief that the move was pushed through for non-football reasons.
“Iker’s exit isn’t because of performances. Maybe he wasn’t at his best in the last two seasons but the reason he’s left is non-sporting,” Canizares continued.
“The new Coach wanted to reassure the team and take out the media attention that was too consuming every day.”
