Spain Under-19 boss Luis de la Fuente says the future is bright for the national team following Sunday’s European U19 Championship triumph over Russia.
La Rojita were crowned European champions for the seventh time in their history after goals from Borja Mayoral and Nahuel capped a 2-0 victory, fit for many Spanish front pages and one that avenged their group-stage defeat to the Russians 10 days ago.
“Russia have a great team and made us work very hard,” the Coach said after the game.
“Our defeat [to them] in the group stage motivated us to improve. This was our best match of the tournament and one of our best ever.
“We were in our best-possible shape, but the team’s desire is insatiable. They always want to win and were very annoyed after losing the first game but played very well [on Sunday] because they wanted to win the tournament.
“This victory means we can remain faithful to our footballing philosophy. It’s testament to the work that is being done to discover new talent.
“[Spain] can be very optimistic for the future because we have a large base of [quality] talent. Many of the players we saw [on Sunday] will play in La Liga or for the seniors within the next few years.”
