Atletico Madrid legend Jose Eulogio Garate believes Fernando Torres is the best striker at the club and they don’t need Carlos Tevez but do need Luciano Vietto.
Tevez has been linked with Vicente Calderon but when speaking to AS, Garate insisted the 31-year-old is the wrong profile for Los Colchoneros.
“Tevez fights, he’s a bully of a player, and he has scored a lot of goals for Juventus,” Garate acknowledged.
“He would be a good presence but to sign him in the current circumstances, at his age and with already having Torres and Mario Mandzukic…honestly, I’d keep those two and not sign him.
“I like Vietto a lot. He’s young and hard-working, talented. I think he’d be a great signing.
“Torres is more than a super-sub. Every time he’s come on he’s played to a very high level. I think the Coach has a great attack with El Nino and Mandzukic, if he stays.
“It’s true Mandzukic didn’t end the season well but he had a good season, in my opinion. He’s a player who works hard, struggles and fights. He scored goals and was a good presence.
“But I think Torres gives better performances. And, for sure, he will next season. He’d always be in my team. He’s the best striker at Atleti.”
Garate, scorer of more than 100 goals for Atletico, also praised Antoine Griezmann for his debut campaign at the Calderon.
“He was the revelation of the season. And he started with problems. He didn’t play, didn’t start, but after two months, he began to score,” Garate recalled.
“His performances were extraordinary. Griezmann’s been a great signing. He’s a young player with a lot of quality and experience. He scores so many goals with his head, he’s very fast. He’s very good.
“Besides Griezmann the player I liked most was Jan Oblak. I think he did very good work. His involvement in the second half of the season surprised everyone.
“In defence Diego Godin has been very good again, an example for everyone. And Arda Turan, a player with a lot of quality, but for me he didn’t produce very much. He had good touches, moments of quality, but his performance wasn’t as good as last year.”
