Montella: ‘We must emulate Bayern’

Vincenzo Montella believes Fiorentina must take a leaf out of Bayern Munich’s book in their Europa League semi-final second leg clash with Sevilla.

The Viola face an uphill task to come back from a 3-0 deficit against Unai Emery’s men but boss Montella feels it is still possible if his players show belief.

“I can’t remember coming back from three goals down in a Cup tie but I watched the Bayern-Barcelona game and I saw a great pride from the Germans,” he told a Press conference.

“They believed right until the end. In situations such as this you need conviction and we have that. We have to score and not concede and it also takes a bit of luck.

“What counts is that we impose ourselves, although I don’t think we necessarily need to score in the first few minutes to stand a chance.

“There are so many things you can wish for – that they have 10 men, that we score early and again at the start of the second half.

“We just need faith and optimism and this is the first step. Why can’t we win 5-0?”

Montella does accept, however, that his side have ‘at most a 10 to 15 per cent’ chance of making it to the final.

“Sevilla have shown they are a great side but we are not inferior. A goal can come at any time and change the game.

“I’m not one to give percentages but let’s say we have a very small chance. Maybe it’s 10 or 15 per cent but we still need to give it all we’ve got.”
