Villarreal have told veteran midfielder Cani that he is free to find a new club in the January transfer window.
The 33-year-old has fallen out of favour with boss Marcelino this season, having started just five La Liga games, and the club has confirmed they are seeking a solution that will satisfy both the club and the player.
Cani, who joined the Yellow Submarine from Real Zaragoza in summer 2006 for a reported €11m, has a contract that expires in June 2017, but loss of form over the past couple of months in addition to several injuries has seen him play less of a role at El Madrigal.
Villarreal, according to AS, are keen to continue refreshing their squad and believe that now is the time for Cani to move on, given he is one of the oldest and best paid members of Marcelino’s squad.
