Ancelotti: Marcelo not to blame

Carlo Ancelotti has leapt to the defence of Marcelo following Dunga's derisory assessment of the Real Madrid left-back.

The Brazilian was yesterday accused of neglecting his defensive duties and contributing to his country's humiliation in the World Cup semi-finals by the Selecao Coach, but Los Blancos boss believes the 26-year-old is unfairly being portrayed as a scapegoat.

"I don't think Brazil had a bad World Cup because of Marcelo," he said at a Press conference ahead of Madrid's encounter with Almeria on Friday.

"I think Marcelo is definitely the best full-back in the world, but it doesn't necessarily mean that he must play for Brazil because we're happy if he stays here."

Ancelotti then gave fitness updates on James Rodriguez, Sami Khedira and Luka Modric, before showering praise on squad members Asier Illarramendi, Javier Hernandez and Nacho Fernandez.

"James had a little problem, but he'll have recovered for the last game of the Club World Cup," he added.

"We hope that next Thursday he'll be back with the group. He's already started running again.

"Modric will have a CT scan tomorrow. His muscle has healed well and he should be back in training in the middle of January.

"Khedira will be available for the final but no sooner. He will be discharged on Monday, so he'll travel with rest of the team to Morocco.

"lllarra can play alone [in defensive midfield], but there's no need to reposition Kroos because he's doing very well where he is.

"Illarra's playing a little more to the right, but it's not a big deal because he can play in the middle, centre-right or centre-left no problem.

"It's normal for a striker, when he plays little, to make the most of the chances he's given.

"I've never asked him specifically to score goals but to help the team. Not everyone can appreciate Chicharito's work.

"He's doing very well, never stops working and we appreciate him. As is the case with Nacho, too.

"I would give more minutes to Chicharito because he deserves them, but he knows there is much competition at Real Madrid.

"It means nothing if Carvajal did not play in the Champions League, but he can play the next game of course."
