‘All clubs should copy Atletico’

Spain’s secretary of state for sport has outlined new punishments for violence and crowd trouble related to football.

The proposals come in the aftermath of the death of a Deportivo La Coruna fan after fighting prior to the game against Atletico Madrid last weekend.

Miguel Cardenal has confirmed that legislation is to be introduced within a matter of weeks that are intended to change the relationship between the clubs and the ultras groups, and also commended Atletico for expelling one group, Frente Atletico.

“We’ve committed to it and, this month, the reforms will take place immediately,” he said, AS reports.

“On December 15 the reforms will be communicated and they cover partial closures of stadiums, point deductions and forcible relegation.

“These commitments should lead to the landscape being unrecognisable in May. We say to clubs ‘Do you ensure these groups have nothing to do with you?’

“Everyone should do what Atletico did with Frente. Absolutely.”
