Cristiano Ronaldo says he wants to be the best footballer ever by the time he hangs up his boots.
The Real Madrid star was speaking at a ceremony in the Spanish capital where he collected his third Golden Boot from club President Florentino Perez.
“I always try to do well and my statistics over the past few years have been very good,” he told an audience that included a number of current Madrid players.
“The last two have been a little better but being the best player in Portugal is not good enough for me. I want to be the best ever.
“When I finish my career I want to look back at the figures and see if I’m among the best.
“Everyone is talking about this Real Madrid squad and we’ll find out how good we are at the end of the season. If we don’t win anything then we won’t be the best.
“Individually, I’m very happy and playing well. As a team we have to make the most of this good run and continue it until the end of the season.
“Maybe we are getting a bit more possession, which is good, and we’re causing teams problems because of that and creating more chances, but the style of play is more or less identical.”
The Portuguese then dropped a hint he would be willing to sign a contract extension at the Santiago Bernabeu.
“We’ll have to speak to Florentino about extending my agreement. I hope to remain with Madrid until the end of my current deal, when I’ll be 33, and we’ll see if he wants to extend it for a few more years,” he asserted.
