Brendan Rodgers is contemplating leaving Steven Gerrard out of Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid.
The Daily Mirror reports that the Reds’ boss is ready to take a huge gamble by resting Gerrard at the Santiago Bernabeu, after admitting he sees this weekend’s Premier League game with Chelsea as more of a priority.
However, the Irishman believes it is not a risk even though people are bound to question his judgement.
“I don’t see it as a gamble. This week and these games against the likes of Real Madrid I feel are a great opportunity for the squad,” said Rodgers.
“You put them out there and put your trust in them to perform, and in Steven’s case I have to look at what the priority is for him and us.
“If he played against Newcastle [last Saturday] and didn’t play on Tuesday you might say that is the priority.
“We’ve spoken about it. Three big games, Newcastle, Madrid, and then Chelsea. I need to look at the number of players and the games we want them to play in.
“But I’ve also got to look at the fact we’ve brought in others and there is a responsibility.
“There’s no doubt our priorities are the Premier League and the Champions League – and always in that order,” he declared.
