Steven Gerrard has revealed he passed up the opportunity to join Real Madrid earlier in his career and says he may one day regret it.
The Liverpool midfielder, speaking ahead of his club’s Champions League group game against the Spanish giants at Anfield, said he turned down the chance on more than one occasion.
“I had a couple of options in my career to go to Real Madrid but I resisted the temptation because of the feeling I have for my hometown club,” he told gathered media.
“It could be something I regret further down the line for not challenging myself and experiencing another country, yet I’d have regretted it even more if I’d left Liverpool.
“I have a great admiration for Madrid but Liverpool is my No 1 club.”
Gerrard was asked about the threat posed by Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored 15 goals in his last seven games.
“There were signs when Cristiano played for Manchester United that he was world class. The figures he produced there were very good but his game has reached another level since then.
“He has improved every year and I think now he is arguably the best player in the world. The numbers he sets, the records, are phenomenal,” maintained the Liverpool captain.
