Dominguez wants Spain return

Alvaro Dominguez hopes to get a recall to the Spain squad, having been ignored since he joined Borussia Monchengladbach.

Dominguez is one of a number of Spanish players plying their trade in Germany but whereas Javi Martinez or Thiago Alcantara have remained under consideration from Vicente Del Bosque, he has fallen out of favour.

“I’ve always hoped to return for Spain. There are Spanish players here in Germany who are doing very well, playing and making a name for themselves,” he told an interview with AS.

“There are Spanish players out here in Germany who are valued and appreciated.

“I don’t know why I’ve not been called since my debut [in May 2012]. Since I’ve been in Germany I haven’t been called up to the national team.

“I don’t understand why but I guess they would rather take a player from La Liga than the Bundesliga.

“I’ve been here two years and I’m working at a good level. It’s not easy to find a place and a name in German football and I think I have done.

“I’m in touch with Martinez and Thiago, as well as Dani Carvajal. I’ve talked to them about it but these are decisions of the Coach. I don’t know their motives.

“I tried to give my best with the team. I think I did a good job, in training and in matches. Maybe I didn’t stand out. There are other defenders playing at a high level outside Spain.”

Dominguez added that he still keeps an eye on his former team, Atletico Madrid, and welcomed the more competitive Primera they have helped usher in.

“I watch Atletico and the big games,” he confirmed.

“It’s good for the fans [that La Liga is closer]. Before, it was only Real Madrid and Barcelona, and the rest behind.

“Let’s see if it continues as it has been this season. I think it’s unlikely because there are only seven games gone.”
