Sevilla defender Daniel Carrico has given his full backing to goalkeeper Sergio Rico if the youngster plays against Getafe this weekend.
Rico is Los Rojiblancos’ third choice stopper and could be forced into action at the Sanchez Pizjuan on Sunday as both Unai Emery’s other ‘keepers, Beto and Mariano Barbosa, are sidelined with injury.
However, former Reading and Sporting Lisbon man Carrico says he has no qualms about Rico’s suitability as a ready-made replacement.
“He’s very focused, working very well and we have a lot of confidence in him. He’s a young guy with quality, although he lacks experience, but that comes to you over the years,” he maintained.
The Portuguese was speaking at an event during which the Sevilla squad received their own weight in beer from brewers Cruzcampo, a reward for winning the Europa League last season.
Carrico believes that the Sevilla players must show confidence in themselves if they are to have another great campaign and reach the desired goal of the Champions League.
“The ambition must always be there and we need to create a strong side like we had last year. There has been a lot of signings but we must grow as a team.
“Sevilla’s aim has to be to get into Europe and, if it is possible, the Champions League would be very nice.”
