Jose Mourinho has warned against expecting Cesc Fabregas to replace Frank Lampard at Chelsea.
The Blues manager has told an interview with BT Sport, reported by Mundo Deportivo, that instead of expecting Cesc to replace Lampard, he sees the former Barcelona man as changing Chelsea’s style.
“Cesc? He’ll never replace Lampard,” Mourinho told Rio Ferdinand, who conducted the interview on behalf of the broadcaster.
“He is a player we needed to slightly alter the profile of our game. I want to go a step further in midfield.
“Cesc is a fantastic player but we can never say he is replacing Lampard because Frank is Frank and one day they’ll build him a statue.”
Lampard left Stamford Bridge this summer, signing for MLS side New York City FC but joining Manchester City on loan for six months. City are co-owners of the franchise.
