Barca step up Mathieu interest

Barcelona are hoping to conclude a deal to sign defender Jeremy Mathieu from Valencia.

Mundo Deportivo claim La Blaugrana will increase their interest in the France international now Valencia’s ownership situation is a little clearer and the club is in a position to conduct transfer business.

It’s understood that Barca have agreed terms with Mathieu already and now need to do a deal with his club. The two Presidents have been in touch and Mathieu has told Valencia he wants go to the Catalans.

Mathieu has been identified as one of four centre-backs for Luis Enrique next season, with Gerard Pique and Marc Bartra, both already at the club, and Marquinhos, who should join from Paris Saint-Germain.

Sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta is said to have made the Mathieu move a priority as he is aware and accepting of the criticism levelled at the club in recent years for not signing a defender.
