Chile Coach Jorge Sampaoli has said the 3-1 victory over Australia was more important than the performance.
Goals from Alexis Sanchez, Jorge Valdivia and Jean Beausejour gave the South Americans the three points in Group B, with Tim Cahill on target for the Socceroos.
“The important thing was to win so we can still aspire,” Sampaoli told reporters.
“The team was worn down so it was important to get the result.
“We ended the match in a complicated fashion. It could have been more comfortable.”
Chile face Spain next, the World Cup holders having been beaten 5-1 by the Netherlands earlier on Friday.
“Spain are world champions. They had a tough loss today but they’re still one of the best teams in the world,” Sampaoli added.
