Markel Bergara has conceded that Real Sociedad have ‘more ambitious targets marked’, including once more qualifying for Europe.
Against the odds the Basques reached the Champions League qualification stage with a fourth place finish last term and, despite a so-far-winless campaign in the competition’s group stage, they currently sit sixth in La Liga, once more in contention for the European places.
“Quietly, as we have been so far, we have entered into the fight for that objective, and we have been in this fight before,” Bergara has reflected this week.
“Our goal must be Europe, we have taken a step forward, because previously we were fighting against relegation, but now the team has grown and already we have more ambitious targets marked, higher things.
“The victory at Espanyol [in Week 15] was much needed because it was a game that was hard work, at a ground that is very difficult to play at, against a team that play in a particular way, but we had that bit of luck that we needed.
“That we won with a late own goal? You can talk about that, we won because they scored the own goal, but we do not care, because the important thing is the three points we took home.
“Equally we have lacked luck in many games this year.”
