Franz Beckenbauer has remarked that: “Normally [Franck] Ribery would have to win [the Ballon d’Or], but nothing is normal in these elections.”
The Bayern Munich star is seen as likely to make a three-man shortlist for the annual award alongside Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.
“Normally Ribery would have to win, but nothing is normal in these elections,” Beckenbauer mused to Sky Sports this week.
“Ronaldo has put everything in one basket, with all the ambition to win the Ballon d’Or characterising him.
“Although Ribery has been the best throughout the year, it will not surprise me if Ronaldo wins in the end.”
