Real Betis defender Paulao has placed the blame for his team’s 4-0 derby loss to Sevilla entirely upon himself.
The Brazilian [pictured, left] was dismissed on 42 minutes for a second bookable offence and immediately after the game offered his apologies to the Betis supporters.
“The person responsible for everything that happened is me. I want to say sorry to the fans, my teammates, and all Beticos,” he told reporters.
However, the experienced 31-year-old centre-back was quick to point out he believed the dismissal was unfair, having been yellow-carded earlier for something he said to the referee and then sent off for a foul.
“The only thing I said to the referee was ‘what now?’ We can all get it wrong and he got it wrong, but the second card was correct.
“I’m not a violent player, I’m honest, but sometimes things happen you can’t explain. Today something happened that for me was not normal, but it did.
“I want to apologise and nothing more. Every La Liga game for us is now a final. I’m distraught because I won’t be able to play next weekend.”
