Spain’s Prime Minister has given his backing to Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo to win the 2013 FIFA Ballon d’Or.
With voting extended on the 23-man shortlist to be cut down to three for the annual award recognising the world’s best player from the last 12 months, discussion has continued over the three favourites to make the cut – Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Franck Ribery.
Latest to join the rhetoric is Real Madrid fan and Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy.
“I am of Real Madrid, I always have been and if I had to vote, I would give the Ballon d’Or to Cristiano Ronaldo,” Rajoy commented at the end of an interview today on RTVE.
“Messi has also had a great season and Ribery has won everything, he has won the Champions League, the European Super Cup and the Bundesliga, but Ronaldo scored three goals against Sweden and is in a breathtaking moment.
“He is a player who gives everything and who works hard. I would vote for Ronaldo.”
