A Diego Costa double and one goal from Raul Garcia gave Atletico Madrid an easy 3-0 away win at Austria Vienna.
Diego Costa made his first European appearance of the season at the Ernst Happel Stadium, coming in for David Villa up front, whilst summer signing Toby Alderweireld came in at centre-back.
And it was the away side who got off to the brighter start, with Juanfran forcing Heinz Lindner into a save inside the first four minutes.
It wasn’t long though before Diego Simeone’s side had the ball in the back of the net for their opener. A Koke pass found Filipe, who squared the ball for Raul Garcia, and the attacker just had to tap the ball over the line.
The Rojiblancos were looking extremely comfortable, and quickly doubled their lead thanks to Diego Costa. The Brazil-born striker gathered the ball inside his own half, broke past three defenders, and then coolly slotted past the keeper for his first European goal of the season.
Arda Turan almost made it three with a rasping effort, but it was in fact the home team who went closest before the break, only for Philipp Hosiner’s 25 yard effort to crash against the crossbar.
After the break, the visitors maintained their dominance, and quickly put the game beyond doubt as Emiliano Insua’s cut-back found Diego Costa, who had time and space to slot home his second and Atleti’s third.
The game descended into a virtual training match after that with neither side looking to penetrate the opposition defence.
As such, Atleti held out for the three points and maintained their 100 per cent record in the competition so far.
