Villarreal midfielder Cani says his teammates are keeping their feet firmly on the ground despite the great start to the season.
Marcelino Garcia Toral’s men currently sit fourth in La Liga, having lost just one of the opening eight fixtures, but Cani believes that the club’s objectives for the remainder of the campaign should not change.
“We now have games against teams who are just behind us. They are attractive ones in which everybody should be motivated to play.
“However, if we manage to get good results in those there will still be a lot of games left, so despite us doing well it is not the time to alter our ambitions [of safety].
“We have a week off and it will do us good, although in all honesty we’ve been working hard and not had time to relax.
“You never know how it will go after a break as we have a lot of days between one match and another, but hopefully we’ll be okay,” he told Villarreal’s official website.
Cani also spoke of his possible contract renewal and acknowledged the first thing he needs to do is open talks with the club, where he claims he is very happy.
“I’m not thinking of the future but we should be talking soon. Even if it is my own future I don’t want anything to ruin my concentration, while I think the club will try to offer me what they think is fair and I’ll ask for what I think I deserve.
“The first thing is to begin negotiations, that’s clear, and I’m hopeful of reaching agreement.
“Both parties have the idea of me continuing so I don’t think it will be a problem,” he insisted.
