Espanyol midfielder Joan Verdu has revealed that it was he, not the club, who proposed a contract renewal.
The 30-year-old's current deal ends in June, with some media outlets reporting that Atletico Madrid were interested in the vice-captain's services.
But the player has admitted that he went to the Periquitos to discuss a new deal, not the other way round.
“I was the one who proposed a renewed offer,” he told reporters. “I was not sent anything from the club.
“But we have been addressing this issue for a long time.
“We have been talking – the club have never refused to talk to me.
“I want to stay here, I have always said that.”
