‘Ask Pep? No, I’d call Cruyff’

Jupp Heynckes has reflected that he won’t ask Pep Guardiola for advice on how to beat Barcelona and that if he needed it, he’d turn to Johan Cruyff.

Heynckes’ Bayern Munich side will face off against Barca in the Champions League semi-finals starting next week.

It is a meeting between the Catalans that Guardiola coached from 2008 to 2012 and the Bavarians that he has agreed to take over from Heynckes come this summer.

“Pep cannot reveal details about Barcelona, out of respect for his former club,” Heynckes told reporters this week.

“But I also will not have to ask him. I know Spanish football well and Barcelona. If I wanted to call someone, I would choose Johan Cruyff, because he invented Barca’s playing system.

“It’s a big game for the club and of course for the fans, but the team has to understand that we must stay focused on our next game, because we are not playing Barcelona right now.

“We have a week to think about it so we will focus on Wolfsburg, as I have said, who have an offensive style and strong players.”
