Verdu’s European hopes, contract hints

Joan Verdu says that he would love to qualify for Europe with Espanyol, but says that it may not be enough to convince him to stay.

The playmaker is in the final few months of his contract at Cornella-El Prat, with the team enjoying a turnaround in form on the pitch that sees them with an outside shout of qualifying for Europe.

“Hopefully we can get into Europe, but there are still many days of the season remaining,” enthused the 29-year-old after training today.

“I have never refused looking up the table. Hopefully we can qualify for the Europa League, I’d love to go into that with Espanyol.

“My contract? What will be important is sporting aspects, certainly. But there are other things that matter to me.

“When I say that I will study the sporting aspects, it is a little of everything. To play in Europe would clearly be important, but there are also things at an institutional [boardroom] level.

“But, the first and last words on this topic go to the club. Then, we’ll see what happens.”

The club are reported to have reopened talks with Verdu and his agent over a new deal.
