Atletico Madrid are understood to have identified Bayern Munich’s Mario Gomez as a potential replacement for Radamel Falcao in the summer.
Falcao has been continuously linked with a departure from the Vicente Calderon this coming transfer window and is expected to discuss his future with the club at the end of the season.
Subsequently, the club are seen as preparing a back-up plan, should the Colombian leave, and have picked out Gomez as another possible option.
Already said to be monitoring possible moves for any from Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani and Edin Dzeko, Atleti are reported by AS today as having contacted Gomez’ agents over his availability in the summer.
The striker has fallen behind Mario Mandzukic in the pecking order at the Allianz Arena and is expected to fall to third choice in the summer with continued rumours of Robert Lewandowski arriving from Borussia Dortmund.
The Madrid side are yet to make an official move beyond enquiring, reportedly waiting until Champions League qualification and Falcao’s preference are both known before deciding on action.
