Vice-captain Joan Verdu thinks Espanyol can take inspiration from drawing with Real Madrid and shock Barcelona.
Los Pericos held Madrid to a 2-2 draw in their second last fixture before the winter break. Still unbeaten under new boss Javier Aguirre, they face Barcelona at Camp Nou on Sunday evening.
“We believe we can win the derby,” said the 29-year-old on a visit to a local children’s hospital. “It will be very difficult, but we will try to use our weapons. It is the hardest game we left this season, but we can cause an upset. We will meet them at the top of the world, but we have to compete and prove they are not superior to us.”
The midfielder then looked back on the performance against Madrid.
“Nobody put a cent on us. We were silent, working well during the week and eager to get points.”
