Betis ‘end Canas contract talks’

Real Betis have confirmed today that Jose Canas will not sign a new deal, paving the way for a summer Bosman move, or even a January transfer.

The midfielder, who is a key member of the team, had been in talks over a possible renewal of his contract that otherwise expires in June 2013, but this week was also reported as having received a much greater offer from Swansea City, to effectively treble his salary.

Betis Coach Pepe Mel has revealed today that the 25-year-old will not be renewing his contract with them and that the club have broken off talks.

“I have 100 per cent security that he will not continue beyond June 30. I know he is committed to the club and his teammates, he will give 100 per cent whilst he is here,” commented Mel at today’s conference.

“In fact tomorrow he will play. I am convinced that he is going to give 100 per cent, he is a Betico and was brought up here.”

There is also speculation about whether the player will leave in January for a fee, rather than in the summer. Reports in England suggest a £200,000 move to Swansea is set to go through.

In Spain the suggestion is that this is a result of Canas offering that he join the Welsh a lower wage, provided that they buy him now, so as to provide Betis with some compensation.

However, Marca then say that Betis are seen as keen to prioritise the club’s sporting situation over its economic one and are believed to have turned down that approach.

Due to the club’s commitments over its extensive debt, they are likely to only see about a third of any transfer fee, with the rest accounted for through corporation tax, money owed to the tax office and money owed to other creditors.
