Bielsa: Athletic should’ve won

Marcelo Bielsa could not understand why his Athletic Bilbao outfit could only draw with Deportivo on Sunday, but admits ‘this scenario is not new’.

Athletic were held at home to a 1-1 draw by Deportivo in a game that the Basques did more than enough to take all three points from, according to Bielsa.

“This game was winnable, we deserved to win but this has created a feeling of helplessness,” mused the Argentine post-match.

“This scenario is not new to this team. Against teams at or below our level we have been like this and we are having to constantly justify why we do not deserve to be in this position that these performances are generating.

“We had 10 chances to score and did little. We defended well, we increased the number of times we won back the ball and our intensity of play.

“Our possession play was varied, patient, prepared, without urgency. All that calls for a different ending to the game.”

Bielsa handed Fernando Llorente his first start in the League this season.

“He produced the type of performance that made me think the team would score more than we did. Anyway, I saw him with a dose of sacrifice, but perhaps not the competitive level for him to be so good at the start, but I saw it by the end.”
