Goals from Ander Herrera and Aritz Aduriz were not enough for Athletic Bilbao as Olympique Lyonnais beat them 3-2 at San Mames.
Marcelo Bielsa fielded a virtually full-strength line-up for the visit of the Ligue 1 team, and got off to a good start with Iker Muniain and Herrera peppering shots at Remy Vercoutre's goal.
Slowly though, Remi Garde's side started to impose themselves on the game, as Yoann Gourcuff pulled the strings in midfield. And it was from his free-kick that Bafetimbi Gomis headed in from close-range to give OL the lead.
The Basque club continued to create chances, but paid for their wastefulness right on the stroke of half-time as Gourcuff swept home from inside the area.
After the break though, Athletic looked like a team possessed and scored within two minutes as Herrera tapped in to an empty net.
And it got even better just moments later as Herrera was fouled by Maxime Gonalons inside the box, and Aduriz converted the resulting penalty to tie the scores.
That great start couldn't be maintained however, as Alexandre Lacazette smashed home Guida Fofana's cut-back to condemn Los Leones to another Europa League defeat.
