Alcoyano President Juan Serrano is overjoyed at seeing his side draw Real Madrid in the next round of the Copa del Rey.
“Who would have thought that we were going to Madrid?” enthused the President in reaction to the draw.
“Yesterday I commented that I really wanted to play them because they are one of the best teams in the world and to have them in our city…I’m happy for the fans, it will be a big day, a feast for all of Alcoy.
“We are not going to lack in moral, we hope to live up to the circumstances,” promised Serrano, in reference to his saying ‘There’s no more moral than in Alcoyano’.
Serrano also reflected that the much-criticised Cup competition might benefit from a switch to an English-style format, where games are decided on single ties, rather that over two legs.
“A few years ago we played Atletico Madrid in a single elimination game. We would have liked it to be the same now because then it is always easier for the small team.
“Last season we beat Real Madrid Castilla at the Santiago Bernabeu, which isn’t bad.”
