Next weekend’s match between Real Betis and Atletico Madrid at the Benito Villamarin stadium, could be postponed upon Atleti’s request.
The game is currently scheduled for Monday, September 3 to give Atletico an extra day to rest after their UEFA Super Cup game against Chelsea on Friday.
However, as there are international fixtures the following weekend, the game is scheduled to take place on a ‘FIFA day’, a day in which FIFA rules oblige clubs to release their players to join their international squads.
This would mean that Atletico would be without as many as seven key international players for the game against Betis, including Thibaut Courtois, Radamel Falcao, Cristian Rodriguez, Emre, Arda Turan, Diego Godin and Juanfran Torres.
Atletico President Enrique Cerezo has subsequently asked the Spanish League (LFP) to postpone the game to a later date – Wednesday, September 26 – and believes they will confirm the decision soon.
“I think the game with Betis will be moved to the Wednesday. That’s the date we had in mind and I think it’s now semi-official,” he told reporters today.
