Raul Garcia central to Diego move

Atletico Madrid’s move to bring midfielder Diego back to the Vicente Calderon could hinge on their chances of offloading Raul Garcia.

Despite the 26-year-old having impressed boss Diego Simeone in pre-season, Los Colchoneros are understood be willing to let him leave if it means money can be put towards bringing Diego back from Wolfsburg.

The Brazilian spent last season on loan at the Vicente Calderon, helping the club to Europa League success and a top six finish, and Simeone has made it a priority to bring him back to the club.

Despite the player’s insistence last week that he was happy to return to the Bundesliga outfit it is understood he would relish a return to the Spanish capital, with Atleti still trying to put together a financial package for that to happen.

Hence, according to AS, Raul Garcia could well be the key to any possible move as Liverpool and Southampton are both reported to be interested in signing him before the transfer deadline.

Atletico are believed to be keen to wrap up a deal as soon as possible since they face Athletic Bilbao in La Liga on Monday then play Chelsea in the European Super Cup next Friday.
