A report in The Mirror claims Chelsea have made a last-ditch attempt to hijack Luka Modric’s move to Real Madrid.
The Blues made a fresh enquiry for the €35m-rated Tottenham Hotspur midfielder but the Croatian has set his heart on signing for Jose Mourinho’s Spanish champions and is hoping a deal can be tied up this week.
Spurs are believed to be interested in Chelsea pair Daniel Sturridge and Raul Meireles and the Stamford Bridge club have asked about the possibility of doing a swap deal that would see Modric move in the opposite direction.
However, the 26-year-old has set his heart on a move to the Bernabeu despite him almost moving to Chelsea last summer.
Modric was left out of Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat at Newcastle United yesterday, with boss Andre Villas-Boas now understood to be desperate for the player to complete his move to Spain so he can get on with finalising his plans for the new season.
