Reina: Heat a factor in Spain display

Pepe Reina felt it was extremely difficult for Spain to look good in their 2-1 victory over Puerto Rico due to the intense heat.

The Liverpool goalkeeper played 70 minutes of the friendly in Bayamon before being replaced by Iker Casillas, but told reporters afterwards that it had been tough for Vicente del Bosque’s men against a team they were expected to beat with ease.

“In these kind of temperatures it is difficult to give a good image.

“At this stage of the season it is very demanding but we tried to play our football against a team that closed up at the back.

“What you don’t want is to pick up any injuries, but there has been one and that’s football,” explained Reina, referring to the knee injury suffered by Juanfran.

Even so, the 29-year-old believed the visit to the Caribbean island was a valuable exercise and it made the fans happy.

“It’s nice to go where the love of the people is tremendous and for a country such as Puerto Rico it is an honour.

“It is the first time we have been to the Caribbean and the people had fun.”
