Villarreal signing Fernando Cavenaghi says his new club belongs in the top flight and he is there to help get them back there.
The experienced 28-year-old, who numbers Spartak Moscow, Bordeaux, Real Mallorca and Inter among his former clubs, has signed from River Plate on a one-year deal and aims to return the Yellow Submarine to La Primera at the first time of asking.
“It is a great opportunity and a challenge to come to one of the biggest clubs in Spain and Europe,” the Argentine international told a Press conference.
“I am really excited and eager to get this club back where it deserves to be.
“It gives me a chance to show what I can do in this League again [following his time at Mallorca] and the truth is that it is something I have really wanted.”
Cavenaghi compared the forthcoming season in La Segunda at El Madrigal with his experience last term at River Plate, when the Buenos Aires club also regained its top-flight status.
“What happened at River is very similar to Villarreal in that they are two teams that did not deserve to go down and are now obliged to regain their former greatness.
“My big dream is to score many goals and remain here for several years,” revealed Cavenaghi, who confessed it had been an easy decision to sign for Villarreal.
“I had other offers but when Villarreal call you it is a big thing, so I did not hesitate for one moment.”
