Celtic defender joins Real Zaragoza

Real Zaragoza have announced the signing of Glasgow Celtic defender Glenn Loovens, who arrives at La Romareda on a free transfer.

The Dutch centre-back has penned a two-year deal with Los Manos and becomes boss Manolo Jimenez’s fourth signing of the summer after Francisco Montanes, Alvaro Gonzalez and Lucas Wilchez, with Zaragoza understood to have been involved in negotiations for the 28-year-old for the last three weeks.

Having started his career with Feyenoord in 2001, Loovens had loan spells with Excelsior, De Graafschap and Cardiff City before being allowed to join the latter on a permanent deal five years later for a reported fee of €300,000.

After two years in Wales, he moved to Parkhead for €2.5m in August 2008, signing a four-year contract, and helped the Hoops to the Scottish Premier League title last season as well as the Scottish Cup in 2011 and the Scottish League Cup in 2009.

Loovens, who has represented Holland twice, will travel to Costa Ballena near Cadiz on Tuesday to link up with his new teammates.

Zaragoza are also expected to tie up the loan signing of defender Sidnei from Benfica this week after the player spent last season on loan at Besiktas.
