Laporta in dig at Barca chiefs?

Joan Laporta appeared to criticise ex-Barcelona chiefs at Johan Cruyff’s memorial as “those who didn’t appreciate him much are now realising his magnitude”.

Cruyff was an influential figure during Laporta’s Barca presidency between 2003 and 2010, even being named the club’s honorary President by the 53-year-old, but next-in-line Sandro Rosell promptly stripped the Dutchman of the title, while the Netherlands great fell out with Josep Lluis Nunez towards the end of his managerial stint at Camp Nou.

“Those who didn’t appreciate him much are now realising his magnitude,” Laporta said.

"We’re saying goodbye to a man with a very special personality, a genius.

“He revolutionised the way of understanding football and life.

“Barca have had the privilege of being associated with him. He was a reference.

“The 1974 League title, 0-5 at the [Santiago] Bernabeu… they were great. The people of my generation tried to imitate him.

“He was the inspiration for [my Presidential campaign in] 2003, a sporting level which continues today.

“Johan was always grateful to the club. Everyone admired him and we’ll always be grateful and keep in our hearts.”
