Real Madrid legend Raul Gonzalez has revealed that he was “happy” when Barcelona lifted the Champions League last season.
Raul discussed his relationship with Barca in an upcoming issue of Vanity Fair, due to be released on Tuesday, and he saw nothing wrong with wishing Los Blancos’ arch-rivals well in Europe “because they’re a Spanish team”.
“I’ve stepped foot a 1,000 times in Barcelona with Mamen [his wife], and the people treated us wonderfully,” he said.
“The rivalry helps the two clubs [Madrid and Barca]. Barca wouldn’t be Barca without Madrid and vice versa. They need each other.
“I was happy when Barca won the Champions League because they’re a Spanish team and I’m not afraid of saying so publicly.
“Why should I wish harm on anyone? It’s not in my nature.
“[Pep Guardiola and I] liked football a lot, our rivalry was great, as it was with [Carles] Puyol or Xavi [Hernandez].
“Pep and I always had chemistry in the national team. He’s one of the best Coaches in history.”
