Di Maria: I wanted Madrid stay

Angel Di Maria has confirmed he never wanted to leave Real Madrid as he prepares to return to Santiago Bernabeu with Paris Saint-Germain.

The Argentina international departed Spain in the summer of 2014, signing for Manchester United and lasting only a season in the Premier League before switching to Ligue 1.

“Paris is similar to Madrid, a beautiful city. It’s spectacular, everyone knows what it is. Life here is very similar and you can do similar things,” he told Marca, before moving on to the letter he wrote in the same publication upon leaving the Bernabeu.

“It wasn’t written in anger. It was to clarify all the things that were said that weren’t true. If I go to the Bernabeu and I’m whistled it will be for everything that was said about me then.

“My intention was always to stay, not to leave. I don’t know what happened. It is more to do with agents. These things happen in football.

“I left how I left but what I took with me was the beautiful final ovation at the Bernabeu, and I’m content with that.

“It was a beautiful time in Madrid, having won La Decima. It was also special for that ovation in my last game and I’ll always be grateful for what the fans gave me.

“All I did was try to make people happy. If I get a good or bad reception, that’s up to them. I always tried to give my best in the Madrid shirt.”
