Benfica President Luis Filipe Vieira has condemned the supporters who threw flares during the team’s win at Atletico Madrid.
The Portuguese side took a 2-1 victory from Vicente Calderon but the evening was marred by disturbances in the away section, with a flare reportedly coming close to hitting a child.
“It was a very important game for Benfica and I think we showed what we want for the future,” Vieira said regarding events on the field, in a statement on the club’s official website.
“We appreciate the support of the fans but unfortunately many caused disrespect. They should think that what they did seriously undermines Benfica. It’s not just football.
“Most Benfica supporters don’t behave like this and we almost certainly will be severely punished.
“There are things we can’t control. Unfortunately some troublemakers have disrespected what we saw here, tarnished the name of Benfica, when the players did everything to dignify the shirt they wear, the pride of us all.
“It’s a mixture of joy, even though we haven’t won anything yet, but a feeling of deep sadness for what some people have done in this stadium.”
