LFP Vice-President Javier Tebas has reportedly made clear his intention to stand against Jose Luis Astiazaran in the next presidential election.
Elections to fill the role of President at the LFP (Spanish Football League) will be held in April and Tebas has reportedly communicated his decision to stand against current President Astiazaran.
The current VP is believed to have informed members of the G30 organisation, which he fronts, on Tuesday about the decision.
The G-30 group are a collection of clubs, including now five La Liga teams – Levante, Rayo Vallecano, Granada, Malaga and Real Valladolid – and 16 from the lower Leagues, that in 2010 agreed to negotiate the sale of their broadcast rights to Mediapro as a collective.
Tebas is seen in the Press as a strong candidate to dethrone Astiazaran and his decision as the G-30 head to run is seen as a major blow to the group of rebel clubs, including a number of La Liga sides, that have been pushing for institutional change to bring about a fairer distribution of television rights’ income in the Primera Division.
This group of clubs, including Atletico Madrid and Sevilla, were reportedly intending to put forward Enrique Cerezo or Manuel Llorente forward as potential candidates.
Tebas has more than once made clear his support of the current distribution of television rights’ income within the Spanish game.
