Atletico Madrid deny key player is for sale – outline three ‘pillars’ of team

Atletico Madrid have felt the need to respond to a report claiming that goalkeeper Jan Oblak is for sale this summer, following reports that they would consider an offer for the Slovenian goalkeeper.

A report from Diario AS claimed that Los Rojiblancos would be willing to part with the veteran shot-stopper this summer, and Atletico got in touch with the same outlet to inform them that this was not the case. In addition, they outlined that he was one of three ‘untouchable’ players alongside Koke Resurreccion and Antoine Griezmann, which form the ‘pillars’ of the side.

It would have been a major surprise if Koke or Griezmann were to leave, given they are in contract talks with the latter and just signed an extension with the former. Oblak’s exit would have made a little more sense financially. However they do intend to make ‘four to five’ signings in the summer in order to strengthen the team, as they seek to reshape the squad.

While all three are clearly candidates to be key players next season, Atletico’s reshaping should include bids to form a younger core. While Oblak has plenty of time left at the top level, Los Rojiblancos would do well to be thinking about their progression plan after Griezmann and Koke. Arguably the signing of Arthur Vermeeren represents a long-term alternative to their captain.
